Manar decaturDECATUR – Norma Miller walked into the Decatur Macon County Senior Center on Wednesday morning empty handed, but she walked out with answers and a bag of helpful information.

She spoke to representatives from public and private care providers and services.

“It was very nice and helpful. I talked to Veterans’ Affairs and the county health department. They were all helpful,” Miller said.

Miller and other Decatur seniors received free health screenings and information for state and local programs during a senior fair hosted by State Senator Andy Manar (D-Bunker Hill) and Rep. Sue Scherer (D-Decatur).

GroupTAYLORVILLE – Wanda Bottoms walked into Christian County Senior Citizens on Wednesday morning empty handed, but she walked out with answers and a bag of helpful information.

She was looking for help with her health insurance.

“Today was good. It was helpful. Someone was able to answer some questions and is going to call back to answer more,” Bottoms said.

080515CM0511RSPRINGFEILD – The Illinois State Senate honored former Decatur Mayor Mike McElroy with a resolution and moment of silence on Wednesday.

State Senator Andy Manar (D-Bunker Hill) sponsored Senate Resolution 775 honoring McElroy’s life of service.

“Mayor Mike McElroy was a proud, dedicated civil servant who was committed to improving the city of Decatur. Decatur is truly a better place because of his life and work, and his example will live on as a testament to hard work and civic pride,” Manar said.

The resolution states that the Senate, “mourn the passing of Michael ‘Tuna’ McElroy and extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him.”

McElroy passed away last month and had served as mayor since 2009.
