SPRINGFIELD – State Senator Andy Manar (D-Bunker Hill) invited Macoupin County Sheriff Don Albrecht and Macon County Sheriff Tom Schneider to speak during last week’s Firearms Working Group meeting hosted by Lt. Gov. Sheila Simon.
“It’s important for members to understand the impact that concealed carry and other firearm proposals have on local sheriff and police forces,” Manar said.
Both Albrecht and Schneider spoke about their counties’ process for dealing with FOID card requests and offered suggestions on provisions they would like to see in a concealed-carry proposal.
“I'm encouraged that downstate law enforcement and lawmakers are part of the concealed-carry conversation in Illinois,” Albrecht said. “I appreciate Senator Manar inviting me to speak at the meeting and I look forward to continue working on this issue.”
Manar is part a group of freshman lawmakers that have been meeting regularly with Lt. Gov. Sheila Simon as part of an effort to educate members on gun ownership across the state. At each meeting, guests are invited to speak to the group on topics related to firearms.
“I invited both Sheriff Schneider and Sheriff Albrecht to speak because I wanted a downstate perspective presented regarding concealed carry. The goal of this working group is to discuss gun ownership in all parts of the state, not just Chicago.”
The group is set to meet again on March 6 in Springfield.
