SPRINGFIELD – State Senator Andy Manar (D-Bunker Hill) was appointed this week to serve on the Senate Committee on Appropriations I and II, which are key state budget committees tasked with examining state finances and putting together the details of the state budget. Manar is eager to bring his recent experience resolving budget deficits on the local government level to the committee and to work with his colleagues to resolve the state’s fiscal concerns.
“Our state is currently facing serious budget issues; some of these same issues I dealt with while serving as the chairman on the Macoupin County Board,” Manar said. “I anticipate legislators will have to make some tough choices, but I am optimistic that both sides can work together to balance our budget while still properly funding important state programs.”
Shortly after Manar was elected chairman of the Macoupin County Board, the county was dealing with record deficits due to the loss of two coal mines. Manar, along with other board members, made balancing the county’s checkbook the top priority.
“I knew that it was important to get the county’s fiscal issues resolved in a disciplined way working together with both Democrats and Republicans,” Manar explained. “I think those same principals apply to the state’s current financial situation.”
Manar also stressed the importance of allocating state funds equally throughout Illinois and the need to advocate for resources on behalf of the district. “We need to ensure that central and southern Illinois receive their fair share of state resources. Job creation, education funding, and road construction are just as important in the 48th District as they are in Chicago.”
Manar was also appointed to serve on the Senate Committee on Higher Education, Agriculture & Conservation, Executive Appointments and State Government & Veterans Affairs for the 98th General Assembly.
