MOUNT OLIVE – State Senator Andy Manar (D-Bunker Hill), Illinois labor leaders and community members gathered Saturday at the Union Miners’ Cemetery to rededicate the newly restored Mother Jones Monument.
“We need to remember Mother Jones’ work and embody her dedication to the coal miners and workers of Illinois. Now more than ever, Illinois needs to follow her example and defend the rights of workers,” Manar said.
The 80-ton granite obelisk and bronze statues that memorialize turn-of-the-century labor leader Mary Harris “Mother” Jones were refurbished thanks to private donations and a state tourism grant. Manar and Illinois AFL-CIO President Michael Carrigan spoek during ceremony and led the committee that raised $75,000 of donations and coordinated more than $10,000 of donated union labor.
Daniel Kane, the secretary treasurer of the International United Mine Workers of America, gave the keynote address at the ceremony.
The rededication ceremony coincided with the 150th anniversary celebration of the city of Mount Olive, which ran from June 17 through June 21.
