SPRINGFIELD – Today, State Senator Andy Manar (D-Bunker Hill) joined Springfield Boys and Girls Club executive director Bill Legge to announce grant funding that will lead to the renovation of the club’s dining room and kitchen areas, installation of a new surveillance system to protect its members and replacement of the fencing surrounding its 12-acre academic and recreation facility on Springfield’s east side.

Manar worked with the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity to obtain the $35,000 grant that will allow the club to move forward with critical improvements that have been planned for some time.

“This year, we’ve had more than 250 youth benefit from Power Hour, our homework assistance and tutoring program, and recreational out-of-school time activities focused on character, engaged citizenship and healthy habits,” Legge said, executive director of the Club. “Kids are most at risk during summer months and from 3 to 6 p.m. after school, when they are most likely to be unsupervised and exposed to alcohol, drugs and gang violence. Our mission is to provide a safe haven where youth can become productive, caring and responsible adults. This grant will help further those efforts.”

“Organizations like the Springfield Boys and Girls Club provide a positive and enriching environment for the city’s youth and deserve our attention,” Manar said. “It takes funding to keep facilities safe and functional for the kids and staff. I’m pleased today that the state was able to support the club’s mission.”

Each day, The Boys and Girls Club of Central Illinois serves roughly 900 youth, providing character building activities, academic programs and healthy activities. All programming is geared toward delivering measurable outcomes that help members become responsible citizens in the community, live healthy lifestyles and achieve success.
