ManarColeman350DECATUR — The future of education in Illinois was on the minds of many of the students and residents who met with Senator Andy Manar (D-Bunker Hill) at Richland Community College in Decatur during its biennial Engage Your Government event on Tuesday.

The college hosted the two-hour meet-and-greet as an opportunity for people to get to know a variety of government officials, ask questions and express their opinions.

Concerns shared with Manar largely centered on education, including dwindling state support for colleges and universities in Illinois; uncertainty about the state’s Monetary Award Program, which offers tuition assistance to low-income college students; and the status of Manar's ongoing push to reform the way Illinois funds its K-12 public schools.

Among the students Manar spoke with was Karl Coleman, a freshman in poiltical science from Decatur and a member of Richland's Student Government Association (pictured above).

Senate President John Cullerton joined Manar at the event.

Richland professor Larry Klugman and the college’s Student Government Association organized Engage Your Government. Manar said he appreciated all of the civic-minded students and residents who took time out of their day to share their thoughts and opinions with him.
