Manar McCann Supt BreakfastCARLINVILLE – State Senators Andy Manar (D-Bunker Hill) and Sam McCann (R-Carlinville) hosted a breakfast Tuesday morning bringing together State Superintendent Tony Smith and Central Illinois school superintendents.

“This is a great opportunity for our local superintendents to share their experiences, discuss their challenges and highlight their successes with State Superintendent Smith. It was an open, productive conversation that helped broadened everyone’s perspective,” Manar said.

“Our superintendents are challenged with the task of creating schools that prepare our students for success,” said Senator McCann. “Today they are able to connect their local efforts with our entire state educational system, so that all of our schools can work together in a cohesive and inclusive environment that best educates our children.”

Smith was appointed by the Illinois State Board of Education in April. He previously served as the superintendent of the Oakland Unified School District in California and was the executive director of the Stone Foundation, a non-profit that awards grants to schools for educational development.

The state superintendent is the chief administrator responsible for overseeing the state’s educational system and reports to the board of education.

The breakfast was held at Blackburn College.
