AFSCMERallyThe economy of the district I represent in the Legislature is deeply dependent on state government and the people it employs. State workers are dedicated public servants who want Illinois to succeed and grow.

Thousands of state employees suddenly on strike or locked out of their jobs would have a chilling effect on the local economy, harming businesses like grocery stores, day care centers, car dealers, restaurants, utility companies and movie theaters.

This is why I support AFSCME’s call for the governor to return to the negotiating table and work out an agreement on a contract.

Employees represented by AFSCME have been without a contract since July 1, 2015. The governor broke off negotiations with the union eight months ago.

AFSCME represents 38,000 state workers throughout Illinois, including prison guards, public health employees and people who help children, veterans and senior citizens. More than 17,000 people work for state government in the Springfield area alone. Only the health care industry employs more people locally.

I support AFSCME’s continued call for good-faith negotiations, but no deal will be possible unless Gov. Bruce Rauner gets back to the table. I urge him to do so right away so that we can move past this enormous uncertainty clouding our ability to govern successfully and solve the state's problems.
